CCS/CCUS (Capture, Storage, and Utilization of CO₂)

Strengthening and Building the CCS/CCUS Value Chain

CCS*1 and CCUS*2 are technologies to inject CO₂ underground for storage and use.
The ENEOS Group has been working on implementing CCS/CCUS ahead of other companies since FY2014 as we move towards decarbonization. In addition to our own emissions, by also reducing CO₂ emissions from other companies, we aim to create added value, and are working on building and strengthening our value chain in preparation for future expansion of CCS/CCUS.

Business Policies

- Acquire the technologies necessary for building and strengthening the CCS/CCUS value chain.

- Move ahead with initiatives for early implementation of CCS/CCUS.

Main Initiatives

Building and Strengthening the CCS/CCUS Value Chain

In September 2022, we made the US-based Petra Nova CCUS Project, which has been working on this with another company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ENEOS Xplora. Through this project we have also acquired the technologies and operational expertise for CO₂ separation and capture, and for transporting, injecting, storing, and monitoring it using pipelines, and are now working to expand our knowledge further.
In addition, in April 2023, ENEOS Xplora acquired shares in Japan Drilling, which possesses the injection well drilling technology required for CO₂ storage, and made it a subsidiary.

Initiatives Toward Early Implementation of CCS/CCUS

Initiatives Toward Early Implementation of CCS/CCUS

In domestic CCS businesses, in February 2023, ENEOS, ENEOS Xplora, and J-POWER have jointly established West Japan Carbon dioxide Storage Survey Co., Ltd., which will be used to move ahead with a large-scale CO₂ storage business targeting the coast of western Kyushuu. This business has been selected as a “Study on the Implementation of Japan's Advanced CCS Project” by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) for FY2023.
Moreover, the ENEOS Group will further strengthen the Group’s value chain related to CCS/CCUS by adding CCS promotion in eastern Japan to its sights in addition to that in western Japan.
We are also working on initiatives such as considering participating in overseas CCS projects and joint studies with state-owned oil companies, etc. overseas.

Creation of New Environmentally-Conscious Businesses through CCS/CCUS

The ENEOS Group is looking toward the creation of new businesses. We are moving ahead with considering the introduction of negative emissions technologies to reduce CO₂, such as BECCS*3, which recovers and stores CO₂ emissions from biomass power generation and DACCS*4, which directly recovers and stores atmospheric CO₂.
